The Educational Everyday

Image
Someone once said, try not to learn anything at all for a day.... you can't! And certainly kids learn all the time. All. The. Time. I love watching it. In our lives, kids being the ages that they are, learning is everywhere and interwoven with everything. They learn organically, there's never a day when they don't learn - and as such, everything we do is educational. My job is to provide the opportunities; their job is to marvel and wonder.  Little things... From bugs, which are D(6)'s favourite thing at the moment, to how sand feels between the toes and what it's made of, everyday activities and experiences are sources of wonder - just as much as trips to the library or figuring out the times tables. It's all learning. At the library Times Tables Trips near and far Our big travels are chronicled elsewhere - Kenya in the past, Spain, the yearly six weeks spent in Vienna, the upcoming travels to Sweden and Norway will all have their own posts. But those are big, ...

Winter's end

Image
Despite the winter holiday we had, or perhaps because it didn't deliver the sunshine I knew we needed, we felt this winter has been very , very long. We are finally emerging, though - Easter has been and gone and we had an amazing time at Spring Harvest in Skegness where I worked as captioner. Not many pictures of that though because we were busy all the time and it was quite crowded so tricky to take photos without including others! N(8) in particular had the best time there, making new friends and enjoying the kids sessions whereas D(6) still found the hustle and bustle of such a busy week quite overwhelming at times. In other news, N(8) is really blossoming as a footballer now, having started with much enthusiasm but also much trepidation about getting close to the ball or tackling other players. We all continue to enjoy Karate together as well. As we leave winter behind at at last, here are a few photos from the past few months... Found the local BMX track We spent a weekend a...

Seeking Winter Sun in Spain

... seeking is the operative word... Costa del Sol, not so much this week! It’s been cold (13-15 C!) and windy and we’ve had two rainy days to boot. Last year at the same time of year in the very same place, we basked in the sunshine on the beach.  I booked the place we’re staying because it was cheap, looked nice, and was a flight/transfer/hotel package which just made things easier to manage with the in-laws; of course I had no way of knowing what the weather would be like, and it just so happens  that this hotel has a fantastic children’s club, mini disco at night which the kids love, indoor pool and spa (indoor pool is rare here at the Costa del Sol because it’s usually nice year round!) - so we could not be happier with our choice. Sure it would be nicer if we could hang out at the beach, but things could be a whole lot worse if all we had was a hotel room to be in. Here's a selection of photos of our time here! At the beach Windswept... Not loving the cold, w...
