Early Summer 2024

Image
Before we fly off to Vienna, here's a post of things we've been up to as the weather has heated up - it really feels like summer is coming, although of course I know we'll still be hit hard by the Vienna heat... British heat just doesn't compare! Adventures on and in the water For something completely different that we'd never done before, we booked into a cruise on the Paddle Steamer Waverley - going from the Welsh side of the Bristol Channel over to Clevedon and back (about 90 minutes each way). The kids went from being very apprehensive about being on a boat - because what if it sinks! - to actually having a great time. Helped in no small part by a friendly dog sat right next to us, who was actually the highlight of the trip for the kids. Mr. and I did enjoy the ride too though! Yes, our hound came too! Sunset ashore at Clevedon Goodbye and good night, Waverley! Another activity on the water has been a five-week sailing course in the floating harbour. Couldn'...

Spring 2025

Just checking in with a smorgasbord of activities we've filled our time with - there's a number of big events and holidays coming up, but these past few weeks have been low key and routine. And that's really where life happens, isn't it. So here's a roundup of things we have been doing as the weather has finally improved. First - a big one - my sister from Vienna spent a couple of days with us as she was visiting the UK! Fun times, we took her to Slimbridge Bird Sanctuary and we had brilliant weather, a wonderful time together. Now my kids are counting down to when they'll see her again this summer... A few new things we've tried lately - a circus skills workshop where we learned to juggle, spin plates and play with various circus implements; plus, the kids have started a sailing course in the floating harbour - much more enjoyed by N(10) than D(8), but I'll keep them at it for the moment because D might still come around. It's a weekly course that ...

Into a new world: allotmenteering

Image
I am not, and never have been, a gardener. There's some real trauma in my teens, when after moving from my parents' apartment where I grew up and into my aunt's house which had a garden, I found myself having to weed and cut grass for the first time - and I hated it! I never tried again. The garden of our house (as well as the houseplants!) have been firmly Mr's responsibility. On a whim, years ago, I put our name on the waiting list for the allotments near our house. I knew the wait was long, and to be honest I forgot about it, until a few weeks ago an email came in saying there was now a plot and would I like to come view it. I thought, well, viewing it won't do any harm... and the timing was impeccable, because only a few weeks prior to this email, Mr and I finally settled in our hearts and minds that we would not be moving house (which had been vaguely on the cards for years, culminating in almost buying a house in 2022, which fell through). We are in Bristol, a...

Song of a 10-year-old's heart

Image
N(10) has been learning to play the guitar for a little while, but she's only just started creating her own songs. This just blew me away - I was able to type along as she sang this - a spontaneous song of her heart... I have nothing to add, just leaving these words here for a permanent record. I will love God always And you should love God too I really think Everyone should follow him Even though you might not want to I’d advise you that you should do I want you to be a Christian If you don’t then I’ll pray for you I just want to be with people who will understand I know how to be with others, and go to church with others too You might not want to be a Christian But I am, so that you can’t question I love God, no one is like him Though I love other people too But I quite like people who love God If you don’t, then I’ll debate you Hopefully you will one day be one I want you to please do I love God and won’t worship others Only God is my best friend Jesus came down to forgive us Al...
